Quick Guide - Drawing Character Hair

Hair Styles

Different characters have different hair styles. There are huge variety of hair styles applicable to male and female characters. The picture on the right shows a few examples of male hair style. Hair style choice selection truly depends on the personality of the character. If the character is perky, then a spiky hair style is suitable to reflect the agility/quickness tendency of the personality. If the character has rather calm personality, a straight hair style can help exert this trait. It's a good practice to have a collection of hair style pictures and use them as reference when drawing character hair style. However, often common hair style in real world does not adequately support the cast of a main character, especially if we are designing a character for fantasy stories. Another good way is to look at published manga and use them as starting point for your own hair style design. It may become harder to draw character hair when gravity and motion are incorporated into the drawing. One way to be better at this is to practise drawing and look at other manga for reference.

Drawing manga characters from scratch may require one to start from skeletons or poses, especially for beginners. After the skeleton is ready the skinning process can then take place. Male characters may have muscles, which can make them hard to draw. The same case applies to female characters. Muscles are not necessary but the body curves make them consi- derably difficult to draw. Female character are usually drawn in nude form first to ease body curve drawing. The costumes are added after the body has been proportionally set-up. The picture on the left shows the semi-transparent costume revealing the body curve.

While manga specifically refers to Japanese cartoon drawing, animated drawings are also popular across the globe. This is called Anime in Japanese term. Anime has been very popular amongst anime otaku (fanatics) and teenagers. While manga drawings are usually very detailed, anime, on the other hand, does not have as much complexity as manga. Popular Japanese anime like Spirited Away and Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) were drawn in considerably high detail.
